When ‘Michael Jackson’ and ‘allegations of sex crimes’ appear in the same sentence, naturally, many refer back to those that came to public attention in 1993 as well as his 2005 criminal trial. However, this wasn’t the first time Michael Jackson was accused of such disreputable claims.

As in October 1991, a woman named Michelle Flowers successfully gained a restraining order against Michael Jackson based on her declaration that he became obsessed and later raped her at a New Year’s Eve party.

The Californian woman recounted that in 1982 she and her husband were staying in a Compton hotel for the homeless when she discovered Jackson was staying on another floor. She claimed that he then began hanging around her room preaching religion and soon started molesting her sexually. Flowers went on to say, that while in several disguises, Jackson attempted to kidnap her, and the singer again used his religion to influence her and impregnated her without her consent or knowledge, resulting in the birth of her son ten months later.

In 1994, a 31-year-old Flowers launched a paternity and child support lawsuit against Jackson, claiming that she was entitled to a big mansion and 20 million dollars a year to support the son she said Jackson fathered as a result of his crimes. Flowers became incensed in court that she and her son were living in near poverty on welfare, while she estimated Jackson’s monthly income at $10 million. While in court, Flowers also made claims that Jackson continues to sneak into her neighbourhood in disguise in order to torment and threaten her.

Naturally, Jackson denied being the father or ever knowing Flowers and asked the court to restrain Flowers from any more paternity actions. Kenneth Cochrane, the attorney representing Jackson, said she had already filed five legal actions against Jackson, with all but one now dismissed, he questioned Flowers’ mental health and called the case as part of a vendetta the woman had against Jackson.

After nine months of back-and-forth and having just come out of legal throes caused by other allegations, Michael Jackson eventually provided the court DNA evidence to exonerate him from the case. Lawyers on both sides agreed to dismiss the lawsuit based on two rounds of blood and genetic tests showing that the singer was not the boy’s father. Jackson’s legal representatives questioned Flowers mental health and called her a ‘vexatious fanatic out to harass the singer’. ‘It’s unfortunate that people like this continue to use Mr Jackson as a vehicle for their own personal monetary gain,’ his lawyer said. Flowers responded, ‘the samples might have been tainted, like I’m sure they were with OJ’. Demanding a third round of genetic testing, the judge called the plaintiff an annoying litigant and then told her she would have to pay a 15 thousand dollar bond if she wanted to continue filing lawsuits against Michael Jackson. The doctor who conducted the previous DNA tests said there was a probability of more than 99 percent that Flowers’ former husband fathered her then 10-year-old son.

However, years later while Michael Jackson was going through his 2005 criminal trial for alleged child abuse, Michael’s former accuser came to his defence in an unconfirmed written statement online.

‘Anyone who believes that Michael Jackson is a child molester is either a crack head or has a crack in their head… all the allegations the criminal case are based on, are all lies and fabrications, concocted and twisted from unsubstantiated allegations I made against Mr. Jackson. I had no right to file court documents because there was absolutely no violence from Michael Jackson towards my children or me, at any time since I met him in 1982. I have openly apologized to Michael Jackson years ago for my actions and it’s really up to him to forgive me or not.’

She continued, ‘I had an incredible love affair with Michael Jackson, one of cosmic proportions. It was between two consenting adults. It was wrong for me to complain years later about something that happened between us that was actually wonderfully spectacular and spiritually miraculous that would undoubtedly shock the world. I love him and I am like millions of others are concerned for his life. Respectfully submitted, Michelle Flowers’.
